Commodore's Letter - Winter 2009

I seem to have survived my first summer as Commodore, although it has been
quite hectic at times. Cowes Week, as always, was a very busy time for all
the Committee, even those who, like myself, are not actively involved with
racing. There were preparations for our two big social occasions of the
year, the Cocktail Party and ‘Jazz by the Water’, as well as making sure
that all the facilities were ready and available for yacht crews. Despite
the present economical climate our Jazz Night was a resounding success and
judging by comments made by members of other local clubs is one of the
highlights of the Week. By contrast, the Cocktail party was a little quieter
than previous years, although quite a few members remarked that the less
crowded marquee created a much friendlier atmosphere. Most Clubs have
reported a drop in numbers attending functions so I do not think that we
are doing any thing wrong – it is just that everybody has less money to
 spend.

Unfortunately, our Rear Commodore (Sailing), Mike Dixon had to resign his
position as he has accepted a job opportunity in Thailand at quite short
notice. I would like to express my thanks to Mike for all the work he has
put in for the Club over many years, especially for representing the CCYC
on the Cowes Combined Clubs committee. I am sure that all members will
join me in wishing Mike and Wendy all success in his new life overseas. I
am pleased to say that Andrew Millband has agreed to take over all the
duties previously done by Mike.

Jeremy Pocock is now the Club Webmaster and, just in time for Cowes Week,
completely revamped the website and made it easier to keep it updated. For
many years the web has been looked after by Nikki Leete and Terry Munt, who
made sure that much of the material from ‘The Ark’ appeared on the web soon
after publication. Thank you both, for all your efforts! They are now
a break from sailing and devoting their time to maintaining their
vintage steam traction engine.

I must also pay tribute to the new Editor of this magazine, Debbie
McDonald. The previous edition was her first, and she really put her mark
on it with a revised cover and change of layout. It has enhanced the look
no end.

I will not go into great detail regarding the re-development as Terry Webb
has an article elsewhere, but suffice to say we are still working hard at
getting some of the scheme underway in the not too distant future, by
looking at alternative methods of finance. Despite the present financial
climate the Club is in a strong position and it looks like exciting times
ahead.

Finally, my thanks to all who help the Club in so many ways, not least all
the members who support the social functions and other activities. I look
forward to seeing many of you in the Club over the winter months. May Liz
and I wish you all a Happy and Peaceful Christmas with Good Sailing in
 2010.
